Notable
  • It’s also known as Pictasite because of its pistachio green color.
  • Epidote wasn't identified as a separate mineral until the beginning of the nineteenth century by the French crystallographer Rene-Just HaĆ¼y. Before that, it was always considered to be the same mineral as actinolite.
  • It is rare to find epidote in jewelry designs since it is difficult to cut. This is because it is brittle which causes it to fracture unevenly.
  • Iron is what produces epidote's greenish to brownish color.
  • Epidote’s name comes from the Greek word ‘epidosis” meaning increase or addition. Oddly Epidotes was a Greek God whose name means “liberal giver”.
  • When epidote is combined with red felspar in the same mineral deposit it has been given the trade name Unakite.
