How to Clean Silver With Inexpensive Household Ingredients

Cleaning silver can be a long, drawn out affair and dirty job to boot. BUT there is help if you use this simple method!

Gather the following "ingredients"

A Glass or Plastic Dish-Dawn uses a 9x13 Pyrex dish

Aluminum Foil

Baking Soda
Boiling Water
A well ventilated area-Dawn does this on the stove under the hood vent.
Rubber Gloves
  • If you are under the stove hood like Dawn is be sure to turn it on.
  • Boil the water.
  • While you wait for your water to boil place a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom of the dish.
  • Some sources tell you to crinkle the foil up a bit but Dawn never does that. As long as the jewelry comes into contact with the foil it will work.
  • Put the jewelry in a since layer against the foil. Any part of the jewelry that is not touching the foil will not "clean."
  • Sprinkle your baking soda over the jewelry.
  • Pour the boiling water over top of everything.
At this point you will see some bubbling and there will be a sulfur odor present. This is when you will be glad you used a ventilated area! Leave the items to soak for a little while. You will notice the tarnish is just disappearing.

  • Plug your sink drain.
  • Put on your gloves-this way your hands will not smell like the solution
  • Bring the pan over to the sink and rinse each jewelry item under the running tap.
  • Set the jewelry aside on the counter.
  • Now you are ready to open the drain-we did that so you did not lose small pieces down the trap!

*Note: You can either dump the used mixture down the sink or, use Dawn's method, and dump it into the toilet to flush. Dawn does that so the drain has no residual stinky-ness

  • Remove your gloves
  • Now go back and dry your jewelry and buff with a soft cloth.
  • You can add some bee's wax to polish your items up. It will keep them from tarnishing as quickly.

  1. My pleasure. It really is so much easier than trying to use creams and the like. :)
