Notable: Some varieties of fluorite produce a blue, white or cream-colored glow when illuminated with light. This was discovered in 1852 by George Gabriel Stokes and he named the phenomenon "fluorescence" after fluorite. This name has been used since that time to describe anything that "glows in the dark" and is accepted in the biology, optics, commercial lighting and gemology fields as a blanket term.
